ELL Lesson

  • Background

    • Content Area: Digital Literacy
    • Title: Digital Literacy and English Language Learners: A growing vocabulary
    • Grade Level or Target Group: 9-12 grades

  • Pre Planning

    • Big Idea(s): 
      • All students need an understanding of the academic and content specific vocabulary associated with digital literacy.  
      • ELL Students must learn everyday vocabulary.
      • Academic vocabulary and content-specific vocabulary (jargon) are the most difficult for ELL students to learn.  
      • Academic and content-specific language needs to be taught explicitly.   

    • Essential Questions: 
      • What are academic and content-specific words in the area of digital literacy? 
      • What are strategies for learning new vocabulary in general?



Vocabulary Acquisition and Use:

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades 9-10 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

    • Summative Assessment: After working on increasing vocabulary, students will create a class slideshow with each student responsible for a set of vocabulary words.  The presentation of each concept can include text, images, meaning or concept map, and audio to convey the meaning of the identified terms.

  • Lesson Opening

    • Lesson Opening (The Hook): 


The student will explore several stories at News in Levels.  The students will be introduced to vocabulary related to digital literacy: purpose, relevancy, etc, as well as every day and academic words as selected by the teacher.

    • Check for Understanding:  This intermediate-level app provide checks for understanding through numerous multiple choice quizzes.

Extended Practice:  This app allows the student to practice their speaking skills.



  • Closing

    • Lesson Closing: Using this app to create a class slideshow, students will make a slide that incorporates voice and text that they have been practicing.  Students could also use concept maps and images as directed by the teacher.
